DeLorean Stories

DeLorean Stories is an oral history project built around DeLorean ownership – and we want to add your stories. The mission is to collect and share memories for the future, about the fun and frustration of being a DeLorean owner. We’re looking for real stories from real owners: funny, interesting, frustrating, exciting, surprising, or memorable moments from life with your DeLorean.

Stories will be part of the existing DeLorean Talk episodes, so anyone subscribed will get notified of new Stories.

Submission Guidelines

  • Only current and former DeLorean owner stories will be accepted.
  • Start the recording with: Your name, your VIN, your current city and state. (i.e. “Hi, I’m Doc Brown. VIN #05261, and I live in Hill Valley, CA, and this is my DeLorean story…”)
  • Only submit one story per recording.
    • If you have several stories, submit them separately. Multiple submissions are welcome, but may not be published right away so we can feature a variety of owners.
  • Time limit. Recordings must be 20 minutes or less.
    • Submissions longer than 20 minutes will not be accepted. If your recording runs long, please edit it down before submitting.

Recording 101

  • Pick the right story. Think about a story you’ve told before, or that others would enjoy hearing. Tell your story about DeLorean ownership, not someone else’s.
    • Keep it tight. Prepare ahead of time by writing down bullet points you want to get across.
  • Watch your language. Don’t swear, don’t be crude, and don’t bad-mouth other people, shops, vendors, clubs, or owners.
  • Pick the right recording environment. Choose an environment that helps produce a high-quality recording on your mobile device.
    • Record in a quiet room. Avoid fans and background noise.
    • Use the voice recording app on your smartphone.
    • Silence your ringer and notifications.
    • Place the phone on a table in front of you, and tap record.
    • Don’t touch or move the phone until you’re finished. (This helps avoid microphone bumps, rubbing noises, and uneven audio.)
  • Do a short test recording. Record yourself for about 1 minute, telling your story, then play it back to yourself.
    • Listen for background noise, echoes, or other things that distract from your voice.
    • If you need to, put your phone on a stack of books, closer to your mouth.
    • Compare your playback audio to what you hear on other speech recordings.
  • Telling your story. Your story will sound more natural if you pretend you’re telling it to another person – or by actually having someone sit with you while you record and tell them the story.

Story Ideas

The best stories are personal, specific, and enjoyable for other DeLorean owners and fans.

  • Buying your DeLorean
  • Repairs or restoration of your DeLorean
  • Strange or funny mechanical issues
  • Road trips, shows, or public appearances
  • Conversations with people who stop to talk about your car
  • Back to the Future reactions
  • Sharing the car with family, friends, or strangers
  • Something unexpected, memorable, or meaningful that happened because you own a DeLorean

The goal is to share stories that other DeLorean owners and fans will enjoy.

.mp3, .m4a, and .wav files up to 150mb is size can be uploaded.
